James J. Murphy and his brothers opened the Lady's Well Brewery on a hillside above Cork in 1856, naming it for a holy well revered by the city below. Built to serve a busy port, it grew quickly into one of Cork's great employers.
From its terraced site the brewery looked down over the Lee and the rooftops of the city — a fierce local rival to the houses across the water, and a fixture of Cork life for well over a century.
